Development of Warcraze
Introduction
Over the course of several months, Gamerev Productions has been in development of a top - down zombie shooter, Warcraze. Not only does Warcraze provide amazing graphics, sounds, and an amazing story line, but it also allows the player to develop a good connection between the game character, and life. So please, sit back, relax, and read about Warcraze!
Story Line
Warcraze starts off with a great conflict. You and a middle aged man, Jim, wake up one day only to find that your wife and children are infected! They have been infected with the unknown "D - Virus", created by the Parasol Corporation. No one knows about this disease, and those who do are infected. This disease makes people brain dead. How are you and Jim not infected? Well, this disease can only effect people with a certain chemical brain structure. 99.99% of the people in the world have the infected brain structure. You and Jim realize there are others out there uninfected! But, little do you know those people are long gone... Eaten by the cruel zombies! Yet, you decide to look for others, roaming through abandoned houses, killing zombie along the way. After only a little time, your player hates doing this! He hates killing the people he saw only days ago, healthy as can be! Your player later abandons Jim, letting him go... killing familiar faces. You, on the other hand, decide to take matters into your own hands, looking for a cure... A cure to this terrible disease. Will you save mankind, or let the Planet of the Zombie arise?
Game Mechanics
Now that you know what's behind Warcraze, let's talk about the mechanics. The mechanics in Warcraze are built to fit the user's needs. With an almost instant response time, the game is very smooth, and reactive. The controls are set up in a standard layout: WASD simply moves your character, LMB (left mouse button) fires your gun, and the SPACE key moves you through dialogue between characters. You may think that firing the gun is too simple. Well, with a muzzle flash, recoil, and ammo coming soon, you'll defiantly want to keep slayin' zombies! As you look around the houses / levels, you will realize a very subtle feature, a smooth camera. This camera allows you to expand your POV of the level, changing the difficulty of the game as it goes on. Another small feature is smooth rotation. Smooth rotation just makes rotating your player more fine, and less "jumpy". It also provides a challenge to the game. All of this features, big or small, provide a necessary difficulty to the game, as well as a ton of fun!
Music
The music in Warcraze started off rough. At first, we were using copyrighted music that didn't even fit the game. Later on, we were able to find someone who was interested in doing the music. Production was slow, so we posted a job application on the GM: Forums. Replies were almost instant! We were able to get a company to do the music in just a few weeks! The music in Warcraze is very slow, and spooky. As the game progresses, faster music starts playing a role in providing an intense feel for the game. But music isn't just all that makes the game stand out in its genre, but the artwork does too!Artwork
After the music was made, we needed to get away from simple blocks for testing. So with my father being a life - long artist, he was able to help with most of the artwork. Hopefully soon I can get a professional company to create the artwork. But as of now, we have amazing artwork! Here are some examples:
This is the main character in the game, Player.
These are the zombies:
Here is the gore splat for the zombies:
And here is a simple screenshot of the game:
As you can see, there is a lot of detail going into Warcraze to make it pleasing for the user's eye. Now that you've seen mostly all of the game, let's talk about some things we would like to do in the future.
Future Updates
This obviously isn't the full game. There is still much work to be done and the game won't be released until 2017. But some things we will be adding are:
- More dialogue and story line.
- New music
- More levels
- A slight story line twist
- More shop guns
- Finishing touches
Now it may look like this won't take very long, but our team is limited to one programmer.
Conclusion
Thank you all for staying for a small talk about Warcraze. I hope you all are excited for the game, and ready for a release! Stay updated by visiting the Gamerev Games YouTube channel for more videos about Warcraze! Thanks!
